nov 7, 1876 - The Election of 1876
Description:
The Panic of 1873 damaged the reputation of Republicans, and so, Democrats used this opportunity to seize the presidency.
Democrat candidate Samuel Tilden and Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes have a tie in terms of electoral votes, however, Samuel Tilden won the popular vote. This would mark another election in U.S. history where a presidential candidate would win the popular vote but lost the electoral vote (e.g. The Election of 1824)
Thus, the election was held in the House of Representatives. After many arguments of deciding who would become president, the Compromise of 1877 was established, thus Rutherford B. Hayes would become president.
