may 8, 1896 - Plessy v. Ferguson

Description:

A supreme court case that established "separate but equal" decision. This court case overturned the Civil Rights Act of 1875, declaring the act unconstitutional because "if the civil and political rights of both races be equal, one cannot be inferior to the other civilly or politically. If one race be inferior to the other socially, the Constitution of the United States cannot put them upon the same plane."

As a result, racial discrimination strengthened. This supreme court case also shows the 14th amendment's inability to protect the rights of African Americans.
