Description:
- Both campaigned for senator of Illinois.
- Douglas was more famous, popular sovereignty, presidential candidate in 1860.
- Lincoln was not abolitionist, against expansion of slavery. Moral issues of slavery. House divided speech -> Southerners thought he was radical.
- Freeport Doctrine: Lincoln challenged Douglas to reconcile popular sovereignty with the Dred Scott decision, Douglas responded that slavery must be supported by laws. Angered Southerners by not supporting the implications of the Dred Scott Decision.
- Douglas won senator, lost popularity in his party because of Freeport Doctrine.
- Lincoln became nation figure, leading contender of Republican nomination for President in 1860.
