jul 1, 1857 - Dred Scott v. Sandford
Description:
Dred Scott escaped slavery, went to free territory of Wisconsin, lived for 2 years, went back to Missouri.
Scott sued for his freedom in Missouri because he was free in the North.
Decision:
-Scott has no right to sue in federal court because of race
-Congress did not have power to make slaves (property) free (away from owner)
-Missouri compromise was unconstitutional because excluded slavery from Wisconsin and other Northern territories.
North was infuriated, all areas could have slavery due to the decision.
