Description:

Democrats nominated Lewis Cass, platform of popular sovereignty.

Whigs nominated war hero of Mexican War Zachary Taylor, took no position on slavery.

Free Soil Party opposed expansion. Nominated Van Buren. Consisted of Conscience Whigs (opposed slavery) and antislavery Democrats.

Whigs won, Taylor defeated Cass because many Northern votes were given to Free Soil Party.
