- Aristocracy: southern planters
- Farmers: most southern white farmers had little slaves
- Poor Whites: hillbillies, still felt superior to black people
- Mountain People: Appalachian and Ozark mountains, loyal to the Union
- Cities: South did not have many cities, developed an unique culture
- Code of Chivalry: included a strong sense of personal honor, the defense of womanhood, and paternalistic attitudes all who were deemed inferior, especially slaves
- Education: higher education only for the rich
- Religion: challenged slavery, religion who opposed the slavery in the South declined in popularity
- Social Reform: south deemed reforms as northerners’ threats towards southern status quo
