aug 19, 1991 - August Coup
Description:
The August Coup was an attempted military takeover of the government of the Soviet Union by hardliners in the Communist Party who saw Gorbachev's reforms as reckless revisionism that was driving the Soviet Union on the path to destruction. The August Coup failed upon Boris Yeltsin rallying civilian opposition outside the White House in Moscow, and the fallout from the attempt resulted in all the constituent republics seceding from the Soviet Union, with Kazakhstan being the last to do so on December 16, 1991.
