mar 26, 1989 - Soviet Elections
Description:
The Soviet Union held its first (and only) competitive elections, in which dissidents and non-communists were allowed to run on an equal footing with the officially endorsed candidates of the CPSU. While there were some non-communists elected, the elections were an overwhelming victory for the legitimacy of Gorbachev, as the CPSU won 80%+ of the vote.
