jun 5, 1975 - UK European Communities Referendum
Description:
The UK holds a referendum on whether or not it should stay in European Common Market, which passes overwhelmingly 67% yes to 33% no. While the UK had already joined the European Communities two and a half years earlier, there had never been any explicit public assent to this agreement, and thus Harold Wilson's Labour party had run on a promise in 1974 of conducting such a referendum. Despite maintaining the status quo, it is notable that this referendum confirmed that there was a strong sense of pro-Europeanism in Britain, and later pro-Brexit sentiment is a result of a change over time rather than a feeling that has always underlaid the British relationship with the EU.
