oct 23, 1956 - Invasion of Hungary

Description:

Following Imre Nagy's announcement that Hungary was planning on withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact and instituting liberal democratic elections, the member states of the Warsaw pact, led by the Soviet Union. This invasion did much to alienate western European communists, and was the first step in a split that would eventually result in the Eurocommunist movement of the 1970s. Nagy was replaced with Janos Kadar, who pursued similar economic reforms, putting an emphasis on consumer industry, but no political reforms of the sort Nagy wanted.
