apr 26, 1954 - Geneva Conference
Description:
The Geneva Conference ended French colonial rule in south east Asia, and resulted in the independence of Cambodia, Laos, the State of Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The decisive military defeat served to the French at Dien Bien Phu, where French Union troops suffered a long siege before being captured en masse, resulted in favorable negotiating conditions to the Vietnamese that basically drove the first nail into the coffin of European empire. The military and political defeat that the French suffered emboldened secessionist colonial movements around the world, which resulted in the loss of all significant European colonial possessions by 1975 (and with the exception of Spain and Portugal, 1968).
