Iosif Stalin, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for 31 years at this point, dies at his dacha outside Moscow. Following the Soviet leaders death, a struggle for succession breaks out which results in the eventual ascension of Nikita Khrushchev to the position of General Secretary. His reformism saw a lifting of repressive measures in the eastern bloc called the Khrushchev Thaw, as well as attempting to normalize relationships with the west.
