- Kennedy approved a plan to use Cuban exiles to overthrow Castro's regime
- CIA trained force landed at Bay of Pigs but failed to set off uprising
- Anti-Castro Cubans surrendered after Kennedy rejected the idea of using US forces to save them. Castro got more aid from Soviet Union
