feb 18, 1820 - The Compromise of 1820
(Missouri Compromise)
Description:
Proposed by Henry Clay, the Missouri Compromise, also known as the Compromise of 1820, settled the slavery dispute.
It declared that newly formed states under the 36"30 latitude would become slave states, while newly formed states above the line would become free states.
Additionally, Maine would be admitted to the Union as a free state while Missouri would be admitted as a slave state.
So--- 36 30 except Missouri
The Compromise of 1820 would ease tensions of slavery, however, the decision of whether a state will be a slave or free state would be overturned by the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854, nullifying the 36"30 latitude and establishing popular sovereignty as the solution.
When Congress approved the Compromise of 1820, Thomas Jefferson heard about it. He was against the compromise, arguing that states should vote on the issue of slavery, not Congress. He also feared that the alarming issue of slavery would dissolve the Union, writing that "This momentous question, like a fire bell in the night, awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell of the Union."
