jul 10, 1803 - Louisiana Purchase
Description:
Jefferson Purchase from France. Originally intending to purchase navigation rights on the Mississippi river, James Monroe traveled to France to negotiate, in the end buying the entire Louisiana Territory for 15 million dollars-an amazing deal. While essentially doubling US land, it went against Jeffersonian and democratic republican principles of strict constitutional interpretation. Verified the "implied powers" that the constitution held and were promoted by federalists. Jefferson justified the purchase as his way to achieve his agarian limited government view of society.
