jul 10, 1898 - Fashoda Incident

Description:

French troops marched upon Fashoda in modern day South Sudan in an attempt to secure the White Nile for France. They are resisted by British troops who refuse to give up the territory, and after several months of standoff, the French withdraw. Not only solidifying British control over eastern Africa, the Fashoda Incident illuminated both the dangers and the rules by which the major powers engaged in colonialism, pursuing reckless brinksmanship while still mostly managing to avoid open hostilities between powers.
