Hastened the hardening of racial lines associated with slavery, as a way for planters and the colony to control some of the poor

Labor system surrounding and based on indentured servitude. This created a class system. The rich could afford to buy themselves land without doing any indentured labor.
Governor William Berkeley is very much in this richer class. The House of Burgesses strips the poorer class of their voting rights.
The poorer class created a militia to go after the natives. Nathaniel Bacon was the leader. Many attacks on natives. He wants to go full force on the natives and goes to Berkeley. However, Berkeley and the House of Burgesses had enough. So, Bacon's people march on Jamestown and Berkeley flees. Then, Bacon dies from disease. Forces from Europe come and take back over. Rebels hung.
