Description:

First permanent colony. In the Cheseapeake area. John Smith.

Advantages: near a river so easy transport.

Disadvantages: settled during a drought and it is hard to build in the area. So, hard to establish agriculture. Disease like malaria and native attacks

This colony was founded on hard work and John Smith enforced this. Their most successful crop was tobacco, which required a lot of labor.
In 1609 the Starving Time occurs and a lot of the colony dies, resulting in drastic measures to obtain food such as cannibalism. However, they were saved by relief ships seemingly just in time.
Anglo Powhatan War is ended by capturing Pochahontas.
Sit Thomas Dale in 1614 issues a 3 acre decree to the colonists. Colonists work to provide for each other and the colony and it grows.
in 1614 John Rolfe marries Pochahontas, creating deeper peace between the populations. However, later after Pochahontas death they end up fighting and the Jamestown Massacre of 1622 occured.
More fights happen, then peace treaties end up pushing natives into reservations.
Most workers were indentured servants.
in 1619 african slaves introduced.
House OF Burgesses:
representatives met first time in Virginia. Slaves brought to Jamestown. First assembly of people and modeled after English parliament
