A 17 year old, Annie Moore was the first immigrant to be processed on Ellis Island. She was Irish.

Before Ellis Island was opened, immigrants were processed by the state, not the federal government, and most immigrants were process through Castle Garden, also formally known as Castle Clinton (No relation to the former president)
