Description:
Founder: David Hare, with the support of Raja Rammohan Roy and other progressive Indians and Europeans.
Significance:
a) It was established to provide a Western-style liberal education to Indian youth and was one of India's earliest centres of modern Western education.
b) It played a pivotal role in the Bengal Renaissance by nurturing a generation of educated Indians who later became reformers, nationalists, and leaders.
c) In 1855, it was renamed Presidency College; today it is Presidency University.
