Description:
- founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy also called as Father of Indian Renaissance, maker of Modern India
- The Samaj was committed to "the worship and adoration of the Eternal, Unsearchable, Immutable. Being who is the Author and PReacher of the Universe"
- Debendranath Tagore --> founded Tattva Bodhini Sabha in 1839; gave a new life to Brahmo Samaj
- Kesab Chandra Sen --> Brahmo Samaj of India in 1866
Features of Samaj:
- to purify Hinduism and to preach monotheism which is based on learnings of Vedas and Upanishads
- no definite stand on the doctrine of karma and transmigration of soul --> up to the individual Brahmos
- criticizes the caste system
Significance of Samaj:
- condemned the prejudice against going abroad in Hindus
- condemned Sati, purdah system, child marriage and Polygamy, widow remarriage
- attacked on caste system and untouchability
