With Eastern Church and Byzantine Empire occupied repelling Islamic forces to the East and Slavic people groups encroaching from North, the Western Church in Roman begins allying itself with Franks. On Christmas Day, 800 CE, Pope Leo III anoints the Frankish king Charlemagne (a Carolingian) as emperor of the “Holy Roman Empire."
Since the E. Church and the Byzantine Empire were busy dealing with the Islamic people, the W. Church decided to become one with the Franks in the North by crowning at the time Frankish King Charlemagne as the Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day
