jan 10, 1957 - Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Founded
Description:
The SCLC was the organization that ran the Montgomery bus boycott. It also played a large part in the March on Washington as well as many other major civil rights protests. The SCLC, unlike some other organizations, felt that the battle for civil rights should be fought on the streets via peaceful protest, rather than just in the courts. MLK Jr. was the SCLC's first president and they held many meetings in black churches across the south.
