-gov't. ownership of railroads and telegraphs, a graduated income tax, direct election of US senators, and shorter workdays
-became more popular as the country entered a four-year financial crisis
-backed democrat William Jennings Bryan (call for free silver, "Cross of Gold", easy money supply would loosen control of northern banking interests)
-Bryan lost and an improved economy ended the Populist movement
