Mentuhotep II was the sixth monarch of the Eleventh Dynasty and an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. He is credited for unifying Egypt, so ending the chaotic First Intermediate Period and becoming the Middle Kingdom's first king. He launched an attack against the north, finally uniting Egypt under one control. This marked the start of the Middle Kingdom period. Thebes became Egypt's capital under the reign of Mentuhotep II.
