Description:

-federal gov't. exerted less influence over southern states
-The South passed a series of laws segregating black people
-Supreme court assisted the states, by ruling that the fourteenth amendment (granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans) did not protect blacks from discrimination by privately owned businesses
-Court also reversed the Civil Rights Act of 1875 (said businesses and public facilities couldn't be segregated)
-opened the door to legal segregation
