Description:

The National Security Act of 1947 split the army air forces from the army and made them their own branch of the military. It merged the Department of the Army, the Department of the Navy, and the Department of the Air Force into the National Military Establishment (NME). It also created the position of Secretary of Defense to lead the NME. It protected the Marine Corps as a an independent service although it was still under the Department of the Navy. This centralized the command of the various armed forces and ensured that they could work together well. it also created the CIA.
