The Truman Doctrine states "It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." It was issued in response to a threatened financial collapse and Communist takeover of Greece and Turkey after which domino theory suggested Communism would spread throughout the Middle East and all the way east to India.Added to timeline:
