Dwight D. Eisenhower (R) vs. Adlai Stevenson (D). Eisenhower won in a landslide and even won 4 states that had voted Democrat since Reconstruction, Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, and Florida. Republicans also won control of both houses of Congress. The campaigns leading up to this election were the first televised campaigns in the nation's history. Harry Truman's massive unpopularity and Eisenhower's popularity from the war led to Eisenhower winning 55.18% of the popular vote.
