Description:

The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme offensive, was a battle fought by the armies of the British Empire and French Republic against Germany. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 around the river of Somme, located in France. The first day of the battle, taking place on July 1, was the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army. By the end of the battle of the first day, the British forces suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 fatalities. They gained just three square miles of territory.
