apr 25, 1915 - The Gallipoli Campaign
Description:
The Gallipoli (Çanakkale) Campaign was a military campaign in WW1 that lasted from 1915 to 1916. However, the most significant part of this campaign was the landing of Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) troops on the Turkish Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915. The aim of this attack was to allow Allied ships to pass through the Dardanelles, capture Constantinople (now Istanbul) and ultimately knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war. The war was a massive failure to the allied powers, who were not prepared for the strong defense of the Turks and the rocky Turkish terrain. The first day was concluded with the loss of around 2000 men of the Anzacs, and later fell into an 8 month stalemate where no new advancements were made. The total casualties of the war were 300,000 soldiers on the side of the Allied Powers (around 57,000 killed), most of which were Anzacs and 255,268 on the side of Central Powers (around 57,000 killed) most of which were Turks.
