dec 7, 1917 - The U.S. declares war on Austria-Hungary
Description:
The United States declared war on Austria-Hungary eight months after getting involved in WW1 by declaring war on Germany. When declaring war on Germany, President Woodrow Wilson stated that the United States would keep the declaration of war on Austria Hungary, an ally of Germany, on hold. He explained that Austria-Hungary “has not actually engaged in warfare against citizens of the United States on the seas”, and has postponed their discussion with the government of Vienna to a later date. Just two days later, Austria-Hungary terminated diplomatic relations with the United States and requested, in a diplomatic note, for American diplomats to depart the country. On December 4, 1917, Wilson requested in the State of the Union address to declare war on Austria Hungary to "clear away with a thorough hand all impediments to success." Afterwards, Henry D. Flood (in pic) introduced House Joint Resolution 169, an official declaration of war, and on December 7, 1917 the resolution was adopted by the House of Representatives and signed later that day by President Wilson, and thus, War on Austria-Hungary was declared.
