jun 28, 1914 - The Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand's Assassination
Description:
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were shot to death in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. The Archduke traveled to Sarajevo to inspect the armed forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina, conquered by Austria-Hungary. The invasion angered Serbian nationalists who believed the territory should be part of their own. A group of young nationalists planned to assassinate the crown prince during his visit. No one but a 19 year old, Gavrilo Princip was able to shoot the royal couple, while on the road, killing them instantly. Moreover, the date chosen for this imperial visit and Princip’s show of force was June 28, a black date in Serbian history: it was the anniversary of the Turkish victory over Serbia at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. This set the flames of rage among Serbian nationalists even further. The assassination caused a rapid chain of events when Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for the attack that later led to the devastating clash known as The World War I
