The Birmingham protests began on April 3, 1963, with sit-in protests at downtown lunch counters. Birmingham was chosen as the focus of the movement because it was the worst city in the nation for its treatment of African Americans. MLK got arrested because of these protests. However, when he got released, his message reached a larger audiene and as a result, national support for civil rights legislation increased.
