Leon Trotsky was a leader of the mensheviks. Eventually in 1917 he joined Lenin and the bolsheviks and played in important role in the October of 1917 Russian Revolution. Afterwards, he became the commissar of foreign affairs and war, in the USSR. As the commissar of war he made sure the Red Army which represented the bolsheviks did well in war, so he played a key part of keeping the bolsheviks alive.
