It looks like Johnny Depp is on his way to a threepeat -- but not in a good way. His new movie, Mortdecai, is on track to earn just $10 to $12 million this weekend. That would be a terrible showing for the $60 million film and one of Depp's worst wide-release opening weekends ever. It would also put Mortdecai on the path to being Depp's fourth flop in a row. (Yes, Into The Woods is doing fine at the box office but Depp only has a cameo in the film.)

How is this happening? For a while there, Depp was considered the most desirable actor in Hollywood. Thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and huge hits like Alice in Wonderland, Depp's films have earned a total $8.3 billion at the global box office. Studios were happy to throw money at him and let him bring whatever quirky qualities he wanted to lead character because that bet had worked so well for Pirates. Disney, famously, wasn't sure what to make of Depp's Keith Richards meets Errol Flynn take on Jack Sparrow when the first Pirates movie was in production. But they let him go with it and reaped the financial rewards.
