June, 29, 1767
Description:
-taxed good imported directly from Britain (first of these kinds)
-some of the tax collected was set aside for the payment of tax collectors so colonial assemblies couldn't withhold government officials' wages to get their way
-created even more vice-admiralty courts and new gov't. offices to ensure the Crown's will in the colonies
-suspended NY legislature b/c it refused to comply with law requiring colonists to supply British troops
-writs of assistance, licenses that gave the British to search any place they suspected of hiding smuggled goods
-Massachusetts Assembly protested by writing the Massachusetts Circular Letter written by Samuel Adams which asked all other assemblies to protest in unison
-first time protests included the help of "commoners" instead of purely aristocratic men making the rallies larger and intimidating
-they boycotted with the help of colonial women to not consume or import British goods
-after 2 years, Parliament repealed the Townshend duties, but not the duty on tea
