-Netherlands didn't have good farming land so they left for America
-Wanted to go to VA, but Mayflower went off course and hit Plymouth where they decided to settle due to the oncoming Winter

-established Mayflower compact: government's power comes from consent of the governed and not from God
-received help from local natives (Squanto)
-did not tolerate religious freedom
