may 1, 1960 - 22. U-2 Spy Plane Incident
Description:
May 1st, 1960
During a US aerial spy mission over the Soviet Union, a U-2 reconnaissance plane was shot down by the Soviet military. The United States attempted to claim that the pilot was a high-altitude weather researcher however the Soviets believed it was a spy plane. This resulted in the cancelation of the Paris summit. This event is significant because it heightened tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union which hindered the opportunity for nuclear arms limits.
