Description:
August 23rd, 1958
The Second Taiwan Strait Crisis begun after the People’s Republic of China (PRC) began firing artillery shells near islands occupied by Taiwan where military bases were being constructed. After the shelling, the United States began to arm Taiwan with supplies and send warships into the strait. Not wanting to directly fight the United States in combat, the PRC ceased shelling and the crisis ended shortly after. This event is important because it highlights the United States’ determination to enforce their policy of containment.
