oct 29, 1956 - 18. The Suez Crisis
Description:
October 29th, 1956 - November 7th, 1956
To retake control of the Suez Canal, the United Kingdom, France, and Israel invaded Egypt to forcefully take control of the Suez Canal. During the invasion, the British used bombing raids on specific Egyptian targets which caused the United Nations to put sanctions on the UK. These economic tensions forced the UK in asking for assistance from the International Monetary Fund, however, the United States put pressure on the IMF to deny this request as the US was against intervention in the Middle East. This event is significant because it showcases that the UK was no longer the super power that it used to be prior to World War II.
