may 14, 1955 - 17. Creation of the Warsaw Pact
Description:
May 14th, 1955
In response to an ever-strengthening West Germany and the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Soviet Union established the Warsaw Pact, a mutual defense organization. The organization allowed the Soviet Union to take military control of the Soviet satellite states in Eastern Europe. This event is significant as it strengthens the Soviet Union’s control over countries in Eastern Europe and allowed the Soviet Union to have an organization that could counter NATO.
