After Stalin’s death on March 5th, 1953, a power struggle emerged in the Soviet Union. Luckily for Nikita Khrushchev, he used his powers as the First Secretary of the communist party’s central committee to take Stalin’s place as the leader of the Soviet Union. This event is significant because Khrushchev sent the Soviet Union down a path of de-Stalinization which would have a tremendous effect on the Cold War.
