Venezuela gains independence from Spain.

Venezuela was declared independent in 1811 with a constitution drafted by Francisco de Miranda. He was turned over to the Spanish after signing an armistice with Spain during a war with the royalists. In 1813, Simón Bolívar led the Venezuelan forces against the Spanish. He was declared the president of the Republic of Gran Colombia in 1819. Venezuela broke away from Gran Colombia in 1829.
