sep 16, 1821 - Mexico's Independence
Description:
Mexico gains independence from Spain.
The Mexican War for Independence began in 1810. While Napoleon occupied Spain, revolts occurred across Spanish America. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla delivered the “Cry of Dolores” which launched the revolt. After his death in 1811, other leaders followed his example and fought against the Spanish and Royalists. In 1820, a new government proposed reforms and conservatives called for independence. In 1821, Agustín de Iturbide negotiated the Plan of Iguala and defeated those still opposed to independence. On August 24, the Treaty of Córdoba was signed, making Mexico an independent constitutional monarchy.
