may 4, 1942 - 6. Battle of the Coral Sea

Description:

Japanese troops plan to invade Port Moresby in New Guinea in order to set up airbases and stations for soldiers. The US intercepted a message regarding these plans and met Japanese navy with their own naval force. This conflict in Tulagi lasted 4 days and Allies led by Nimtz lost many carriers in the process. After both air-forces were barely functional the battle stopped on May 8th and Japan took the island of Tulagi while Allies maintained control of Port Moresby.
Significance - This was seen as a win and a loss for both Allied Powers and the Japanese Axis Powers. This battle was the first naval engagement where carriers did not fire a single shot and foreshadowed carrier warfare later on.
