Flight to Varennes: the royal flight to Varennes was a very significant event for the French Revolution and the lives of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. On the night of June 20th, 1791 Louis XVI and the royal family attempted an unsuccessful escape from Paris to Austria. They were only able to escape as far as the small border town of Varennes where they were arrested after being recognized by a local police officer. The king's attempted flight provoked charges of treason that ultimately led to his execution in 1793.
