He waged Russia's 1917 revolution alongside Vladimir Lenin. As commissar of war in the new Soviet government, he helped defeat forces opposed to Bolshevik control. He was in a constant power struggle with Joseph Stalin, which led to Stalin deporting him. In 1940, Trotsky was eventually assassinated in New Mexico City by being stabbed with an ice pick by Ramon Mercader, a secret police agent of Stalin.
