Description:

Cause (International): Following the events of Wuchang Uprising, Qing government requested the help of General Yuan Shikai, leader of the formable Beiyang Army. Previous leader Sun Yat-Sen stepped down from the government so that Yuan could become president of China. Yuan Shikai's acceptance of Japan's 21 Demands caused many Chinese to view him as weal.

Effect (International): Several Chinese leaders called for his resignation, but Yuan died before it happened. After the death of Yuan Shikai with no successor, central authority collapsed and China fragmented into different provinces each ruled by warlords, sparking the Warlord Era.

Cause (Domestic): Before Yuan's death, Japan's 21 Demands were accepted by him and that led to Japanese control and Chinese resentment against Yuan.

Effect (Domestic): Japan took advantage of Chinese fragmentation and disunity from the Warlord Era (After Yuan's death) to force new concessions on to China.
