Description:

Cause (International): Imperialist countries such as Russia, France and Germany desired to take advantage over Qing China's overall instability and establish their own spheres of influence over Qing China, but Japan's power drive over China threatened their control over China.

Effect (International): The diplomatic Triple Intervention between Russia, France and Germany was formed and all three countries required Japan to retrocede the Liaodong Peninsula back to China; all three countries were more easily able to share equal control over Chinese territory.

Cause (Domestic): Japan drew harsh impositions on China through the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the First Sino Japanese War, which required China cede Taiwan, the Pescadores Islands, and the Liaodong Peninsula to Japan, as well as open trading ports to Japan and recognize Korean independence; this treaty drew concerns from the Chinese over Japan's aggression and power hungry nature.

Effect (Domestic): When Japanese officials conceded to the Triple Intervention, the public was enraged and criticized the Japanese Government for its supposed public display of weakness.
